What is a Santa's grotto?
A Santa's grotto is where children go to meet Santa at Christmas. Cambridge Dictionary puts it simply:
"A place where children can receive presents from a person dressed as Santa Claus."Cambridge Dictionary
Grotto means a small cave, and in the US you'll also hear it called a Santa house or Santa's workshop.
However you say it, the recipe is the same: a cozy, decorated space where Santa sits, kids line up to visit, and families take photos. The Grotto gives you that space, ready-built. You add Santa, the decorations and the magic.
How to set up a Santa's grotto
Five steps, whether it's going in a town square, a mall or your own backyard.
- Pick the spot and the sizeChoose level ground with room in front for a line and a photographer. Then pick your size: 8' x 5' for a smaller display, 10' x 5' for markets and community events, 10' x 7' for extra room for Santa, decorations and family photos.
- Plan how families visitThe open front lets kids walk straight up to Santa. Keep the entrance clear, mark where the line starts and save a spot in front for photos.
- Light it upRun lit garland or outdoor-rated string lights along the roofline and the front posts, and plan for a power source close by.
- Set the scenePut Santa's chair against the full-height back wall, then add a tree or two, wrapped gifts and a rug.
- Finish the entranceLanterns by the front posts, a wreath on the back wall and a letters-to-Santa mailbox make the first look count.
Decorations are not included with The Grotto.

Start with a covered structure that has an open front. Then add lights, Santa's chair, a tree, gifts and an entrance families can line up at. The Grotto gives you the structure ready-built, so all that's left is the decorating.
What sizes does The Grotto come in?
8' x 5', 10' x 5' and 10' x 7'. Need something else? Custom sizes are available, just ask.
What comes with The Grotto?
The structure itself: quality pressure-treated lumber, sturdy 4" x 4" timber posts, a galvanized corrugated steel roof, an open front, two half-height side walls and a full-height back wall with shiplap siding and shelves. Delivery and assembly by our team are included free. Decorations are not included.
Are decorations included?
No. The Grotto is the timber and steel structure. The lights, chair, tree and gifts in our photos show how you could decorate it and are not included.
Do you deliver and set it up?
Yes, both free. We deliver and assemble in almost all states in the continental US. Our team assembles your Grotto at delivery, typically in under 90 minutes, and there's no self-assembly option. If we can't fulfill your order for any reason, you get a full refund.
When should I order?
As early as you can. Each Grotto is built to order. Typical lead times are 2 to 4 weeks and can run longer in busy seasons, so ordering early leaves time to build, deliver and assemble it before Santa arrives. There's no fixed cutoff date, since timing depends on your location. We'll text you when we're ready to schedule your delivery.
Why are the photos digitally enhanced?
This is our first season offering The Grotto. Our photos are digitally enhanced images of our real Taverns-To-Go structures, showing how they can be adapted and decorated for Christmas. The finished Grotto follows the specifications in our listing, but it may differ slightly from the enhanced images. For example, the back-wall shelves are included, but they may look a little simpler than in the photos. We'll add photos of finished Grottos as they're installed.
