How a Kegerator Works
Simple, once you follow the path the beer takes. There's no pump — gas does all the work.
- The CO2 tank holds compressed carbon dioxide; a regulator steps the pressure down to something a keg can handle.
- The gas line carries CO2 to the coupler on top of the keg.
- The coupler locks onto the keg valve — gas in the top, beer out.
- Pressure pushes down on the beer, forcing it up a dip tube that reaches the bottom of the keg.

How to Fit a Kegerator Into a Freestanding Outdoor Bar
Other guides handle this in a sentence, or assume a masonry outdoor kitchen with a pre-cut appliance opening. A wooden bar on a patio or a lawn is a different install with different rules.
Cutout size and clearance
Outdoor-rated units cluster around 24–25 inches wide, so that's the number to design around. Planning the opening:
- Use the unit's published cutout dimensions, not its cabinet dimensions — manufacturers list both and they aren't the same.
- Add side clearance so the door swings fully. A door that only opens 80° makes keg changes miserable.
- Check total height with the tap tower installed — a bar top overhang kills an otherwise-perfect fit.
- Confirm the hinge side before ordering. Left- and right-hinge are usually separate SKUs.

Front-venting vs. rear-venting — the one that kills compressors
A refrigerator makes cold by moving heat somewhere else. Seal it in a wooden box with nowhere for that heat to go and the compressor runs constantly, the beer never gets cold, and the unit dies early.
- Freestanding units vent out the back and need 2–3 inches of open air behind them — fine under a bar top if the back is genuinely open.
- Built-in installs — enclosed on three sides by cabinetry — require a front-venting unit. Non-negotiable. Front-venting models exhaust through a grille at the bottom of the door, which is why they can be surrounded by wood.
- Enclosing a rear-vent unit anyway? Cut a generous vent panel in the back of the cabinet and leave it permanently open. Louvered, not solid.
Getting power to a bar in the middle of the yard
This is the part people improvise, and the part that matters most.
- Use a GFCI-protected circuit. Outdoor receptacles need ground-fault protection — it's what stands between a wet connection and a shock.
- Use a weatherproof "in-use" cover — the bubble style that closes over a plugged-in cord, not the flip lid that only seals when empty.
- Don't run a kegerator on an extension cord long-term. A compressor is a continuous motor load; long or undersized cords cause voltage drop and the compressor works harder. Get a real outlet at the bar.
- Give it a dedicated circuit if you can — especially if the bar also runs a TV, a second fridge, or string lights. Startup surge is what trips shared breakers.

- If a cord junction must sit outside, put it in a weatherproof connection box rather than on the ground.

- Set the unit on pavers, a raised platform, or a built-up cabinet floor, above standing water.
- Leave an air gap under the cabinet floor so trapped moisture dries instead of sitting against wood.
- Level it. An unlevel kegerator pours badly and the door seal won't seat.
- Check the deck math: 80–120 lbs empty plus 55–160 lbs of keg — a concentrated load in one square foot of an elevated deck.

- Unpasteurized craft beer: 6–8 weeks. Most craft kegs are unpasteurized — which is why they taste better, and why the clock is shorter.
- Hop-forward IPAs: noticeably faded by 3–4 weeks. Hop aroma goes first. Still fine to drink, just no longer the beer you bought.
All of that assumes the keg stays cold and under CO2 throughout — let one warm up and the countdown accelerates. It's the real argument for sixtels: you finish them while they're at their best.
Cleaning and Maintenance Schedule

- Every keg change: run cleaning solution through the beer lines, and disassemble and soak the faucet and coupler. Beer stone and yeast build up faster than you'd think — this is the big one.
- Monthly: wipe the drip tray, check the CO2 gauge, confirm the temperature hasn't drifted.
- Every 3 months: inspect gas and beer lines for cracks or cloudiness and replace any that look tired. Tubing is cheap.
- Every 3 months (outdoors): clean the vent grille — pollen, clippings, and cottonwood fluff clog it and the compressor overheats.
- Annually: check the door gasket, re-level the unit, and wipe the stainless down.
Do this and a kegerator lasts 10–15 years. Skip it and you'll be chasing foam and wondering why your beer tastes like a dish sponge.
Winterizing an Outdoor Kegerator
Outdoor kegerators are rated for outdoor conditions, not hard freezes. Most bottom out around 32°F — below that the appliance isn't designed to run, and water left in the system can freeze and split lines. If your winters drop below freezing, shut it down properly:
- Finish or remove the keg — don't leave beer in an unpowered cabinet all winter.
- Run a full line cleaning, then blow the lines out so nothing wet is left to freeze.
- Disconnect the CO2, close the tank valve, and store the tank upright out of the weather.
- Dry the interior and leave the door slightly ajar so it doesn't grow mildew.
- Unplug it, then cover or enclose it — winterize panels do the same job for the whole bar.
